Land
THAT CHANGES
Monesiglio is steeped in deep agricultural roots and centuries-old traditions. This small municipality located in the Alta Langa has a fascinating history that has influenced the path of Cascina San Martino.
During the 20th century, like many rural areas, Monesiglio faced depopulation challenges. Many cultivated fields were abandoned and forests began to take over. This change put the agricultural tradition of the region at risk.

AND THE RESTORATION
Let our land not be abandoned!
Over the years unfortunately the land has changed a lot, when we were children we remember the work of our grandparents in cultivating wheat, barley, the hay for the cattle, and even before that, sixty years ago or even earlier, almost all the land was cultivated…looking at the photos…how much difference to today, where the forest now takes over!
But something, in our own small way, perhaps we can ‘create’… and so, with much sacrifice and commitment, we have begun little by little to return the land to what it once was, cleaning it up, reclaiming it, and making it ready again for new crops, which for us are the hazelnut and almond tree! Returning to see those lands tidy, well-kept, and well-managed is our goal!!!
Constant development
OF THE TERRITORY
We are continuing our work with tenacity, persevering in our goal of enhancing the territory, which is very important for those who, like us, ‘still believe in it, despite everything!
CLEANING THE WOODS
Caring for the land through conscious logging involves the careful management of forest resources, aimed at preserving biodiversity and minimising environmental impact. This practice not only protects native flora and fauna, but also promotes the regeneration of forests, allowing them to thrive in a healthier and more resilient environment.
THE STONE QUARRY
The removal of stones from farmland is an essential step in creating a fertile environment conducive to crop growth. Stone clearance also contributes to improving soil structure, facilitating drainage and reducing the risk of waterlogging. Well-drained soil promotes air circulation, preventing compaction and creating optimal conditions for root development.
ALMOND TREES
The Alta Langa region, once renowned for the cultivation of almond trees, has seen this crop gradually disappear due to social and economic changes over the decades. Today, the decision to plant almond trees again represents a return to the roots, a commitment to rediscover and valorise the unique natural resources of this land.
Almonds
OF CASCINA SAN MARTINO
The cultivation of almond trees is one of Cascina San Martino’s main activities. These trees, steeped in history and tradition, are once again playing an important role in the Alta Langa.
Here’s why:
Rediscovery of Tradition: At one time, Monesiglio was famous for growing almonds, but over the years this tradition had been lost. Cascina San Martino is bringing this ancient crop back to life, planting new almond trees and reviving the art of growing them.
Benefici Nutrizionali: Almonds are an extraordinarily nutritious food. They are rich in protein, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats such as monounsaturated fatty acids. Consuming almonds regularly can help improve heart health, weight management and even skin health.
Culinary versatility: Almonds are a versatile ingredient in cooking. They can be eaten alone as snacks, used in salads, or made into delicious spreads. Their presence in local kitchens adds a touch of authenticity and flavour to many traditional dishes of the Alta Langa.
Hazelnuts
OF CASCINA SAN MARTINO
IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) hazelnuts are an agricultural treasure of Cascina San Martino.
This is what makes them so special:
Respect for the Territory: Alta Langa PGI hazelnuts are cultivated in a unique territory, characterized by an ideal climate and soil for growing high-quality hazelnuts. Cascina San Martino is committed to preserving and enhancing this territory, cultivating hazelnuts using traditional and sustainable methods.
Nutritional Benefits: Hazelnuts are a superfood. They are an excellent source of antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Consuming hazelnuts can help improve heart health, aid digestion and provide healthy energy.
Artisanal Products: Cascina San Martino takes IGP hazelnuts from the Alta Langa and transforms them into high-quality artisanal products. The spreadable creams, for example, are made from roasted hazelnuts and other natural ingredients, with no preservatives or artificial additives.
