The centre of Monesiglio has very ancient origins, probably dating back to the 2nd century B.C. when the Stazielli Ligurians were forced, after strenuous opposition, to surrender to the advancing Roman legions.

The territory of Monesiglio is located in the hilly area of the Langhe, in the extreme south-east of the Province of Cuneo. It lies at the foot of a hill that slopes down to form the right bank of the Bormida river. Monesiglio has very ancient origins.

Visiting the Castle

SUMMER PERIOD

The castle known as ‘dei Caldera’ dates back to 1221; numerous renovations completed in the 17th century transformed it into a late-Gothic style palace.

The Caldera family was a noble family that obtained the title of counts in the 16th century.

It stands massive and is visible from the road behind cornfields and almost defends the settlement.

Of the original 13th-century construction, almost nothing can be seen: during the 18th century, the defence complex was converted into a noble residence.

Today, the oldest part appears to be the imposing substructure of the hill, a real masonry terrace. Still in good condition is the central tower, decorated with swallow-tailed merlons.

Further alterations were made in the 19th century and then again in the following century, until the entire building was adapted for parish use.

In 1940, during further restoration work on the manor house, frescoes with figures from the 16th century decorating the interior of the chapel were brought to light. The frescoes were attributed to Antonio Occelli, a painter originally from Ceva.

The castle – part of the Lower Piedmont “Castelli Aperti” (Open Castles) circuit — preserves the Hall of Coats of Arms inside.

Guided tours of the castle take place during the summer period.
